How to choose a digital single-lens camera Which should you choose, mirrorless or SLR?

First, let's introduce how to choose a digital single-lens camera, including the latest trends.

Digital single-lens cameras are divided into two types, mirrorless and single-lens reflex, depending on the structure.  When choosing a product, it's a good idea to first decide whether you want a mirrorless camera or an SLR camera.  Each has different characteristics, so think about what you want to shoot and choose according to your style.

Mirrorless is a new type of camera that is becoming the mainstream of digital SLR cameras.  Unlike a single-lens reflex camera, it has a structure that does not have a mirror inside the body, which is an advantage that it is small and lightweight and easy to carry.  Most of the entry-to-intermediate machines weigh less than 500g.  The shooting style is that of watching the image on the electronic viewfinder (EVF) or LCD monitor.  Unlike a single-lens reflex optical viewfinder, you can shoot while watching the image that reflects the color and brightness, so it is easy to imagine the finish and it is easy to use even for beginners.  In addition, AF (autofocus) can be used while watching images even in dark places, which is an advantage over SLR cameras.

The disadvantage is that the battery performance is inferior to that of a single-lens reflex camera.  Regarding the AF performance, the latest model has improved performance, so I don't think there is any great stress in focusing.

Shooting screen of Canon's mirrorless "EOS Kiss M".  With mirrorless, the shutter is released while watching the image in which the color and brightness are reflected.  Another feature of the mirrorless is that you can use AF even around the screen.  The green frame on the screen is where you actually focused with AF

On the other hand, single-lens reflex cameras have a long-standing structure with a mirror and an optical viewfinder.  The advantage of the optical viewfinder is that you can see the scenery through the lens in real time.  The advantage is that there is no time lag between the actual scenery and the scenery seen in the viewfinder, and you can shoot with good response as if you were catching the subject with your own eyes.  In addition, the AF is fast in focus, making it easy to follow moving subjects such as children.  If you find the shooting style in the optical viewfinder attractive, you should choose an SLR.

However, due to its structure, it is difficult to reduce the size of a single-lens reflex camera, so the disadvantage is that the body is larger than the mirrorless type.  Furthermore, since it is necessary to install an AF unit for the optical viewfinder separately, AF is inevitably concentrated near the center of the screen, which is a difference from mirrorless.  The latest model has more AF focus points than in the past, but still AF in the vicinity is not possible.
